Samsung N310 Netbook Available in US

BestBuy appears to be the first store in US to have Samsung N310 netbook available for ordering online. Up until now, Samsung N310 netbook has been selling in the UK, Korea and Europe.

The new netbook costs $480. Interestingly, the specs list a higher capacity 6-cell lithium-ion battery as opposed to the 4-cell battery 4400mAh seen in the UK models. Samsung N310 netbook features an Atom N270 processor, 1GB RAM, 10.1’ 1024 x 600 Display, 160GB HDD, 1.3MP Webcam, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Windows XP and weighs 2.7 lbs and is only 1.1’ thin.

Hewlett Packard Updated Pavilion DV2

Here's a good news for AMD processor mania. Hewlett Packard has launched its new 12-inch mini notebook, HP Pavilion DV2, with the latest Dual Core AMD Athlon Neo processor. Basically the new model is pretty much the same as the older model except for the fact that the new notebook boast of faster Dual Core Neo processor. Another interesting feature of HP Pavilion DV2 is that it features integrated Radeon HD 3200 graphics chip. Other features include 4GB of RAM, and 320GB HDD. The updated HP Pavilion DV2 notebook is slated to go official next week so stay tuned for more information.

Sony is about to release its VAIO VGN-P50 ultra compact mini notebook in Japan on June 6th, 2009. Using Windows XP as the OS, Sony VAIO VGN-P50 mini notebook has an 8-inch ultra wide LCD screen with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor, a 1GB RAM, a 80GB HDD, and Intel’s US15W chipset. VGN-P50 also features a couple of USB 2.0 slots, IEEE 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, multi-card reader and four hours of battery life. Measuring 245mm x 120mm x 19.8mm, it only weighs 626grams. Sony VAIO VGN-P50 is priced at around 85,000 Yen ($890).

Windows 7 Netbook to Come

Good news for you who wants to get a new netbook with a copy of Windows 7. It will come with a special version of the OS. It is a bit limited version though. But don't worry, Microsoft has decided not to limit the graphics capabilities (such as Aero) or the ability to use a touchscreen which is nice. The main thing that Microsoft is worried about is making sure that the hardware used isn’t too powerful.

Basically the netbook will have a 10.2-inch or smaller screen, no more than 250GB hard drive, or 64GB SSD and no more than 1GB RAM. The CPU can only have a single core, be clocked at no higher than 2.0Ghz and run at 15W or less. It doesn’t look like these are set in stone yet, but it does give us a good idea of what to expect.

Onkyo has just released its new mini notebook in Japan. It’s the Atom-powered DC204A3 and it comes with all the usual features like Intel 945GSE Express chipset, 1GB RAM, a 10.1” LCD monitor at 1,024 x 600 resolution, integrated Wi-Fi, built-in web cam for video calls, D-SUB and Ethernet.

There are not optical drives nor NVIDIA Ion in the DC204A3 netbook, but you can have a 32GB SSD. Price starts at €380.

The official words come that Samsung will produce a 12.1" notebook, the NC20. The NC20 is a larger cousin to the NC10 netbook from Samsung and this larger version will use a Via Nano processor.

VIA, who is likely quite happy with the Psion netbook trademark situation, has always referred to these small notebooks as "mini notebooks" rather than recognize Intel’s "netbook" preference and that’s what VIA is calling the NC20. This new notebook from Samsung will use a 1.3 GHz VIA Nano processor and a 12.1" display that delivers 1280×800 resolution and has 1.3 MP web camera. The integrated VIA Chrome9 graphics set this apart from the Atom-based netbooks shipping today.

Lenovo New Y Series Notebook IdeaPad Y450

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 is smaller sibling of the Lenovo Y650. It is smaller (14" that is) but share many elements of the same hardware platform. Among the differences: its CPU has less cache memory (that sometimes helps with performance) and it is fair to believe that clock frequencies will be lower too. However, Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 can as much as one full hour of additional battery life compared to the Y650, from 3.5hrs (discrete graphics) to 4.5hrs (integrated graphics). Overall, it shares the same design of the Y650, I have a particular interest in the 14" version. Price is $829.

The 12-inch U20A and 13.3-inch UX30 are all based on Intel’s Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV), ranging from the entry 1.2GHz Celeron M in the U20A to the 1.3GHz Pentium, 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo in the UX30. Sharp has introduced the new Mebius netbook with a second screen for the Japanese and US market. The 10-inch netbook's second screen is a 4-inch LCD where the track pad would normally be. The small screen has 854 x 480 resolution and can show video and other content on its little screen. The screen also doubles as the track pad and can be used to input handwriting into the computer.

Other than the little screen, the netbook has standard features as an Intel Atom N270 CPU, 10.1-inch LCD with a 1024 x 600 resolution, 160GB HDD, and three USB ports. Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth are also built-in. Sharp Mebius NJ Netbook is available in Japan ($815) and America through importer Dynamism ($999). The battery life with dual LCDs won't be satisfying I guess.

Toshiba claims its new mini notebook, Toshiba Mini NB200 got a 9 hour battery life. Toshiba Mini NB200 range packs the standard 160GB HDD, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but comes in two different spec sets: the one with an Atom 1.6 Ghz processor and that of 1.66 Ghz. It can be upgraded from the three cell battery to a six cell offering up to nine hours of life.

Those with butter fingers might be tempted by Toshiba Mini NB200’s accelerometer which protects the hard drive in case of a trip to the pavement. Toshiba Mini NB200 is available in brown, black, white or pink with prices starting from £319 this May, so we’ll find out then if it really can stand out from the netbook crowd.
